Thai Style Vegan Satay Sauce that's ready in minutes, tastes incredible, and gets the seal of approval from our little ones.
This sauce can be used to coat crispy Tofu & rice, it can be stirred through Noodles in a Stir-Fry, or used as a dipping sauce for Veggies or Tofu Skewers, just to name a few.
The thickness is easily adjusted to your liking by simply adding a splash or two of water.

What You'll Need

Ingredients

Thai style vegan satay sauce ingredients laid out in glass bowls on a white background and labelled.
Thai Style Vegan Satay Sauce Ingredients.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar - This adds a big boost of flavour to the sauce, so if you're wanting a more mild sauce (especially for young children), we recommend adding half of the recipe quantity first and tasting, then adding more if you wish. You can also substitute Apple Cider Vinegar for Rice Vinegar.
  • Garlic - Fresh Garlic is a well known immunity booster. As raw Garlic can be 'spicy', we've only added a small amount, however feel free to add more if you wish. This is a very adaptable recipe.
  • Ginger - This makes our recipe a little different to a traditional Satay Sauce. It gives it a more 'Thai-Style' flair, and we love it.
  • Lime - A splash of Lime juice also adds to the Thai infusion.
  • Maple Syrup - Check the ingredients on the bottle to make sure you're buying a pure Maple Syrup, instead of another sweetener with Maple Syrup added.
  • Peanut Butter - We highly recommend using a Roasted Nut Peanut Butter in this recipe. It doesn't have to be a smooth one, it just can't be an unroasted nut peanut butter, it makes a big difference to the end result. For the best result also try going for a pure peanut butter, with no added palm oil. We always use Pip & Nut.
  • Soy Sauce (low sodium) - We recommend using a Low Sodium Soy Sauce, as you still get all the flavour, but without a high amount of Sodium. This is especially important for Children as they only need a very small amount in their diets.

Equipment

  • Bowl
  • Garlic Press or sharp knife
  • Whisk or fork

How to Make it

Side by side photos of steps 1 & 2 of the recipe. The left photo shows the glass bowl with fresh, minced, garlic and ginger. The right photo shows the same glass bowl with the soy sauce, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar and peanut butter added.
Steps 1 & 2.

Step 1 - Mince the Garlic and Ginger, either by using a Garlic Press or by dicing very finely with a sharp knife, then add both to your bowl.

Step 2 - Add the Apple Cider Vinegar, Lime Juice, Maple Syrup, Soy Sauce and Peanut Butter to the bowl.

Side by side photos of steps 3 & 4 of the recipe. The left photo shows a whisk part way through mixing all of the ingredients together, and on the right is a bowl of finished vegan satay sauce.
Steps 3 & 4.

Steps 3 & 4 - Using a Whisk or a Fork gently begin stirring all the ingredients together for a few minutes. Initially the Peanut Butter will separate, as shown in picture 3. However, once you continue whisking together for a minute or two, it will start to blend well with the other ingredients until it is all well combined (picture 4).

Substitutions & Variations

For a few way to mix this recipe up, try adding one or a combination of the following suggestions:

  • Coconut Milk - Adding tinned Coconut Milk to this Satay Sauce will make it even creamier, and would make a great sauce for a Satay curry.
  • Coriander (Cilantro) - Try adding some fresh chopped Coriander to the sauce for an extra touch of flavour.
  • Chilli - or you can spice things up a bit by using some fresh red or green chillies.

Serving Suggestions

We love using our Satay Sauce with Tofu Skewers. It also works really well as a sauce for drizzling over roasted Vegetables such as Sweet Potato and Bell Peppers, served on a bed of rice.

Storage

This can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days in an airtight container.

Recipe Tip

This is a relatively thick sauce on purpose - It allows you to add varying amounts of water in order to reach your desired consistency, depending on what you intend to use the sauce for.
For Stir-Fry's, we recommend adding ⅓ cup water and mixing well, and for a dipping sauce, add ½ cup water. If using as a marinade for Tofu or Veggies, use the recipe as is.
